Literacy
The San Diego Public Library's award-winning literacy programs help counter national trends indicating declines in literacy. A 2007 report found an alarming drop in reading among Americans. The study warned that lower literacy and reading comprehension rates correlate to lower academic achievement.
Less-skilled readers also are less likely to vote or actively engage in social and civic activities.
The Library's literacy programs help expand the world of books and reading to adult learners and children.
READ/San Diego -- is the Library's adult literacy program. The program received the American Library Association's Advancement of Literacy Award and was a U.S. Department of Education model program.
Families for Literacy -- introduces families who are low-literate English speakers to the services of the public library and teaches parents how to read to their children.
Isabel Schon International Center for Spanish Books for Youth -- is a circulating library that promotes literacy and reading. The Center, located at the San Diego Public Library, ensures broad access to high-quality books for children and adolescents in Spanish and in English about Latino people and culture.
One Book, One San Diego -- brings San Diego together to read and discuss an important book each year. Entering its third year in 2009, the program features author events, book discussions at libraries and other in-library events.
Student Writing for Literacy Essay Contest -- Entering its 14th year, the Student Writing for Literacy Essay Contest promotes literacy through reading and writing. Students in the 4th, 8th and 10th grade (both public and non-public school students) served by a San Diego Public Library are eligible to enter. The contest is sponsored by the Friends of the San Diego Public Library, the San Diego Public Library and the San Diego Unified School District Library Media Teachers.
