Union Tribune--Construction of new Central Library could spur economy

February 6

A San Diego Union-Tribune editorial noted the potential economic stimulus a proposed new Central Library and new City high school could provide to the regional economy if the project were to move forward.

"This project would generate up to 600 high-paying jobs at the peak of construction. It's the classic public works stimulus for San Diego's economy, and work could begin on it immediately."

The editorial noted that the proposal to build a new City high school on the site of the new Central Library is "an inspired idea that would serve urban students and library patrons alike." To move the project along, the Union-Tribune encouraged the state Board of Education to grant the project a waiver to the Field Act, which spells out requirements of school construction. As the paper points out, the project could be moved along expeditiously without compromising the health and safety of students.
