San Diego Union-Tribune art critic Robert Pincus named a library art exhibit featuring the works of Alexia Markarian one of San Diego's ten best for the year. The exhibit, “Alexia Markarian: Paintings and Works on Paper, 2000-2008,” was at the Pacific Beach/Taylor Branch Library from May 27 through July 13.
In recognizing the exhibit Pincus said, "Markarian makes some of the most compelling and enigmatic drawings and paintings you're likely to find anywhere. Women, birds, masks and other things co-exist in a symbolic universe that is seductive for the power of draftsmanship alone. Her biggest show in seven years seemed way overdue."
The exhibit is part of the Library's nationally-recognized program which recently celebrated its 11-year anniversary. The program presents museum-quality art exhibitions at Libraries and hosts artists’ lectures, a television program, and other art-related activities. The Program demonstrates the Library’s role as a cultural institution embracing a broad range of disciplines and is one of a handful of libraries nationally with its own curator--Mark-Elliott Lugo.
Visual Arts Program activities are funded almost exclusively from gallery sales and individual donations. Visual Arts Program funding is needed to support daily operational expenses, acquire works for the Library’s Permanent Collection of Art and build additional exhibition facilities.
