City Council and Mayor reach deal on this year's budget
December 5, 2008
The San Diego City Council and Mayor Jerry Sanders reached an agreement on plans to meet mid-year budget shortfalls that do not cut seven library branches as originally proposed by the Mayor. The City was challenged to meet $43 million in budget shortfalls for the current fiscal year because of the slow economy.
In late November, the Council voted to keep the branches slated for closure open until at least June 30, as recommended by the council's independent budget analyst, Andrea Tevlin. Tevlin said before closing libraries and recreation facilities, the city needs to first undertake a comprehensive study to figure out how it would take care of shuttered buildings in the long-term and how it would deal with projects already under way.
