City Council votes to keep libraries open for now
Monday, November 24
The San Diego City Council today voted 6-1 to adopt the Independent Buget Analyst's recommendations and keep open seven libraries Mayor Jerry Sanders targeted for closure through the end of the current fiscal year.
The council voted to keep the facilities open until at least June 30, the end of the current fiscal year, as recommended by the council's independent budget analyst, Andrea Tevlin. Tevlin said before closing libraries and recreation facilities, the city needs to first undertake a comprehensive study to figure out how it would take care of shuttered buildings in the long-term and how it would deal with projects under way.
Councilmembers supporting these recomendations noted the strong public support for library services over the last several weeks. Several members noted they believe libraries are an essential City service. For more information on the council vote, visit here.
