READ/San Diego Helps Mother to Read
San Diego Union-Tribune colmnist Ozzie Roberts recently profiled the relationship between Maria Gonzalez and Esther Olson, the woman who helped Maria to read 18 years ago.
Esther, now age 100, was a tutor in the San Diego Public Library's READ/San Diego adult literacy program and Maria a willing student. Today, Maria works full-time for the City of San Diego and attends City College.
She clearly credits both Maria and READ/San Diego for making many milestones in her life possible.“Esther and this program not only changed my life, they changed my family's life for the better,” Maria says. “They taught me to never be ashamed to ask for help. “And most of all, they made it so that I could help my kids (ages 14, 19 and 22) – that was always the main motivation. I didn't want my kids to grow up like me. I wanted them to have a mom who could help them.”
