San Diegans Choose 2009 One Book Title

In online voting, San Diegans selected The Zookeeper's Wife by Dianne Ackerman as the title San Diegans will read in the 2009 One Book, One San Diego program.

The book recounts the remarkable true-story of Jan and Antonina Zabinski, the keepers of the Warsaw Zoo, who, during World War II saved hundreds of people from Nazi persecution.  The Warsaw Zoo was badly damaged by the Nazi bombardment of 1939.  When most of the animals were dead or gone, Zabinskis summoned the courage to smuggle and shelter Jews as well as Polish resisters. Hiding in animal cages and crowded closets, the Warsaw Zoo became a human refuge. It’s a rarely told story of hope and survival.  USA Today described it as “a treatise on nobility.”

Diane Ackerman has received many prizes and awards, including a Guggenheim Fellowship, Orion Book Award, and the John Burroughs Nature Award. She has been honored as a Literary Lion by the New York Public Library and has the rare distinction of having a molecule named after her --dianeackerone.

San Diego Public Library Foundation and KPBS will welcome Diane Ackerman to San Diego with a series of One Book presentations and events early next year.
