Central Library "example of how big projects can get built”

June 20

A San Diego Union-Tribune editorial lauded the New Central Library construction project for creating as many as 1,200 jobs, which comes "at a welcome time, with the San Diego County unemployment rate headed down but still at a painfully high 10 percent."

The editorial quoted Ron Rudolph--vice president and director of operations for Turner Construction Co., the construction manager at risk for the New Central Library project. Rudolph noted that the project involves 132 contractors and that 94 percent of them would be San Diego County firms. Additionally, 23 percent of these firms are owned by racial minorities, women or other historically disadvantaged business people.

The New Central Library project faces a final vote before the full City Council on Monday, June 28 at 2 p.m. The Library Foundation is calling on all Library supporters to step up and help make the final push on this essential project. Please consider:

  • Calling or emailing your City Council representative to let him or her know how important this project is to the San Diego Public Library system. Your call or email does not need to be long but should express your support for moving forward with the project.
  • Attending the City Council meeting at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 28 in the Council chambers at the City Administration Building at 202 "C" Street on the 112th floor. If you do plan on attending, please contact the Foundation at
