Pivotal votes on New Central Library in June

June is a pivotal month in the future San Diego's public library system with the City Council scheduled to take two key votes to approve the New Central Library. With positive votes at council meetings on June 16 and June 28, groundbreaking on the New Central Library could occur in July.

Library supporters are encouraged to contact their Council member today to let him or her know the Central Library is the heart of the branch library system and a healthy New Central Library is essential to a healthy branch system.

At the end of May, the City announced that the guaranteed maximum construction price for the project is below the 2005 estimate of $184.9 million. With this bid, the project now moves to the City Council for final approval. Visit here for a one page backgrounder on the importance of this project and the need for San Diego to capitalize on opportunities that allow us to build the library now without using one cent from the City's General Fund.
