Council and School Board approve school lease for new Central Library
April 28
Yesterday the San Diego Unified School District Board approved the terms of a 40-years lease agreement with the City of San Diego to locate a charter high school on the new Central Library's sixth and seventh floors. The school board action follows the San Diego City Council's approval of the lease last week. Supporters of the new Central told the Board about the unique educational opportunities a school on the site of the Library would present to students.
The lease calls for $20 million from the school district that will be used toward financing construction of the library. The lease was approved by a 5 to 3 vote with Council President Ben Hueso and Council members Marti Emerald, Kevin Faulconer, Todd Gloria and Tony Young casting yes votes.
"What better use to incorporate into a library than classrooms that are going to provide a much needed use?" asked Council President Ben Hueso in supporting the lease agreement.
