Library Foundation Chair Judith C. Harris and Vice Chair Mel Katz described the unique opportunity San Diego faces to build a new Central Library. In an op-ed article in the San Diego Union Tribune's Dialog section, Harris and Katz noted the City can build a new downtown library without bonds or additional general fund expenses. They also said moving forward on construction of the facility doe not jeopardize funding for the branch library system.
"We do not have to choose between suportnig our beloved neighborhood libraries and building the new central library that San Diego needs and deserves," they wrote. They also noted that $147.5 million has already been committed to the project from sources that cannot be used to fund branch libraries or other City general fund needs.
