San Diegans Choose 2010 One Book Title

Outcasts United is the 2010 One Book title

The votes are in and San Diego will be reading Outcasts United in the 2010 One Book, One San Diego program. The title by Warren St. John was selected in online voting in October.

Sponsored by the San Diego Public Library and KPBS, One Book, One San Diego is a community-wide reading initiative bringing San Diego together to read and discuss one book and its important themes.

Outcasts United focuses on a small Georgia town overwhelmed by change as scores of families from war zones in Liberia, Congo, Sudan, Iraq and Afghanistan resettle there. The book follows a youth soccer team led by a charismatic, American-educated Jordanian woman who formed the team to keep refugee children off the streets. The story is one of resilience in the face of extraordinary hardship, the power of one person to make a difference and the daunting challenge of creating community in a place where people seem to have little in common.

Entering its fourth year, One Book uses book discussion groups, author and scholar lectures, and in-library related presentations, to educate and enlighten while promoting reading as a source of pleasure and enrichment.

Look for One Book activities beginning at your library beginning this winter. Previous One Book, One San Diego titles are The Zookeeper’s Wife, Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Mission to Promote Peace…One School at a Time and Enrique’s Journey.

Cubic Corporation, Lloyd Pest Control and the Linden Root Dickinson Foundation are program supporters.
